Rarely do science fiction and fantasy appear on stage, but that was what Within Theatre set out to do with its first production Nightfall Ablaze. The story follows Kaiser Inferno, a clone that has been created to be a perfect soldier. As he trains to be a formidable combatant, he begins to question his purpose, his feelings, and his very humanity. Is he a person with desires that he can he freely acquire, or is he a machine designed for only one purpose?
Nightfall Ablaze was a unique production, as the entire performance was done in silhouettes and candlelight. Performed at the E. D. Feehan Theatre, everything was backlit, creating crisp, black silhouettes on a colourful backdrop with brief glimpses of the players lit by candles. It created a distinct visual style which thrilled audiences as they watched this fantastic story unfold and crash down before them.
